History of Alanya’s Red Tower (Kızıl Kule)

The Red Tower, known in Turkish as Kızıl Kule, is not only one of Alanya’s most prominent landmarks but also one of the best-preserved examples of Seljuk architecture. Commissioned in 1226 by Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I, it was built to bolster the city’s maritime defenses and secure Alanya as a pivotal port in the region.

The tower’s architect is believed to be Ebu Ali from Aleppo, who designed it with a distinctive octagonal layout. Constructed with red bricks, the structure earned its name “Kızıl Kule” (Red Tower). Standing at around 33 meters in height and approximately 29 meters in width, it exemplifies the impressive military architecture of the Anatolian Seljuk period.

Inside, the tower comprises five floors, each serving different purposes in the past—ranging from ammunition storage and provisions to living quarters for soldiers and lookout stations. A cistern at the center of the tower provided water during sieges, ensuring the occupants could sustain themselves.

During the Seljuk era, Kızıl Kule functioned not only as a defensive stronghold but also as an administrative hub where taxes were collected and maritime trade was regulated. Even after the decline of the Seljuk Sultanate and subsequent shifts in power, the tower remained a critical defensive structure up until the late 19th century.

Today, the Red Tower welcomes visitors as a major tourist attraction and houses an Ethnographic Museum, showcasing historical weapons, local handicrafts, and cultural artifacts that shed light on the region’s rich heritage from the Seljuk era to modern times. From the top of the tower, one can enjoy panoramic views of the harbor, the city, and the Mediterranean Sea.

Along with Alanya Castle, the Red Tower is listed on UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List, symbolizing its historical and architectural significance. It continues to stand as a focal point of Alanya’s cultural identity and remains a must-see destination for those looking to immerse themselves in the city’s vibrant history.
